How did you attract/address you audience?
In order to attract and address our audience we undertook interviews
an focus groups in the research and planning stage of our project. We decided to interview a range of people within our target demographic to help shape our ideas. This is the
information we got back:
The question we asked, and why, were:
- what is your favourite movie from the thriller genre? we asked this question so that it can help us when it comes to our own film opening as some of the films opening features can help is in ours
- what do you like best about thrillers? this was one of the most important question as it help us in deciding what our own production should/can contain to make it more entertaining for our target audience
- what is your favourite actor for the genre? this question help in establishing what gender is more dominant (based on our interviews) so that we may work upon it, and maybe meet or challenge the convention
- would you choose thrillers over any other genre? we decided to compare the genre to the other top ones such as comedy so that we can see how much its watch with our target interviews, this also helps because we can get a rough idea on what our target audience will prefer to watch instead of thrillers
- do you watch thrillers often? we wanted to know how popular thriller film are amongst our target audience
Mrs Greenwood was the first person that we interviewed who is over 35 and she said that the reason that she likes to watch thrillers is because of how exciting and fast moving they are and how there are often interesting twists in the plot lines and the fact that her best actor is Daniel Craig because of how he looks implies that having attractive characters is one the key ways in attracting our target audience also the characters immersing there-selves creates a bond or realism between the characters and the audience which allows them to continue to watch on.
Mr Porter was the second male over 35 that we interviewed and his view on thrillers was that thrillers are his favourite genre and this allowed us to go into depth with him. He said he likes to watch films made by Alfred Hitchcock like North by Northwest and this suggested that, for us to attract our target audience, we should get ideas from key thriller movies like having a very dramatic storyline and this is also what Mrs Greenwood said, furthermore his favourite actor is George Clooney because of how good looking he is and how skilled he is when it comes to being delicate and precise and also when fact that he wouldn't go to watch a romance film starring George Clooney and directed by Hitchcock hints that our storyline should have a very sophisticated with enigma to keep our audience interested
Mr Johnson was the final person that we interviewed and he said that his favourite actor is Sean Connery because of how good he acts also Mr Johnson like the thriller genres because of the storyline that it has which is when there suspense with a good guy bad guy theme along with romance
In our opening, we put in several thing that will excite which varied for camera shots to certain images, some of the things are:
These eyes are used when displaying the titles, however it then later comes back when we are looking at the main character and towards the ending, this implies how important they will be later on in the film also we can see that the girl is slightly moving, which can make the audience wonder if she actually died and the fact that we used a high angle shot of her in the cellar makes her look even more vulnerable.
The POV shot that we used, I think is very effective in creating suspense and enigma because the audience will be asking question like who is that person and this will make them want to watch on and finally the sound that we used if very good in keeping the audience at the edge of there seats because it goes in time with some certain parts of the opening which helps in creating a little horror parts and I think this is good in appealing to our target audience
From our interview, i have gathered that there are three main points that our target audience want to see: Good looking and acting characters, Lots of suspense and a Dramatic story line and this allowed us to make adjustments to our opening. We used young pretty women in our opening so that the audience will feel engaged with them better than using 40 year old females, we also created a lot of suspense by leaving unanswered questions during the opening like not giving any information on why the girl is covered in blood makes the audience want to watch more, just to know who she is and how she ended up like that and finally having a dramatic storyline was done by using some features from famous thriller films made by Hitchcock like Birds as we though that he is best person to look up to from really involve the audience with the film
To conclude, we had to make sure our film had a lot of suspense to keep the audience interested, we achieved this in many ways like through the very theatrical music which helped in making the whole opening very intense and profound also the way the girls body kept coming back throughout the scene surly makes the audience want to keep watching to know what happened to her. The various techniques we used includes the different types of lighting to set the mood for example, in the cellar, there was very low key lighting but a bit of a shine on the body and this was done to signify the importance of the body and when we went to the bedroom, the high key lighting contrasts the other one which helps in establishing 2 different types of atmospheres in the opening

ReplyDeleteThen, with screenshots, describe the things you put in the opening to make it so exciting/appealing. Think about camera shots (i.e. the POV), edits, transitions, titles, sounds, and obviously enigma etc (which I know you've said)
Then it's an A
